| Established in 1927, Atelier 17 developed under the English-born engraver and painter Stanley William Hayter into a workshop of experimental printmaking. With the onset of World War II, Hayter relocated Atelier 17 from Paris to New York, exposing a new generation of American artists to novel print techniques and ideas. In New York, Hayter emphasized a sense of surreal freedom in his engraving, while experimenting with new materials and techniques. This exhibit hopes to illuminate Atelier 17’s legacy of intellectual discourse and emphasize the artists who absorbed its principles. |
