| Joseph Pennell is known as Whistler’s biographer, etcher of the "Wonder of Work" and of "New York: The Unbelievable City," of temples and ruins of the ancient world, and of the ancient buildings of London. He is not, however, normally thought of for images of mountaineering in Switzerland. Nevertheless, in August 1889, Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) and his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936), traveled to Switzerland to write and illustrate an article entitled “Play and Work in the Alps” for the June 1891 issue of The Century. The exhibition currently being held in the Works on Paper department at Childs Gallery consists of the original drawings and gouache paintings created for this article. This is the first time these works have been exhibited to the public. |
