| "Beyond Degas: Dance in Art in the 19th and 20th centuries" showcases artworks in several media that tackle the problems of dance in visual art, and succeed. The exhibition centers around the spectacular etchings by Troy Kinney that portray some of the greatest dancers of the early 20th century—Pavlova and her virtuosic cavalier, Violinin; Roshanara, the first dancer to bring traditional Indian dance to the West; and Doris Niles, a personal friend of Kinney’s and a captivating Flamenco dancer, among others. Kinney lavished attention, study, and a great deal of thought on how to best capture the characteristics of motion, rhythm, and line, and as a result his etchings are exciting, true renderings of dancers and their art form. Other works featured in the exhibition explore different styles of dance, from ballet to traditional Mexican folk dance and Indian kathak and bharata-natyam. |
