Provenance: Robert Muller to John Douglas (1797) to his daughter Elizabeth (1807) to the Salisbury Corporation (1820) to the London Art Market [Frost and Reed] (1966), to Childs Gallery (c. 1966-67). Exhibition: Royal Academy London 1797 # 206 as "W. [sic] Muller, Painter, Windsor, Portrait of a Bishop. (John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury)." This is certainly a misreading of "R. Muller." Labels: Back bears Frost and Reed Label Reg. # 40473 "English School / Portrait of a Judge in Full Robes". Written in chalk in the stretcher "s8711". Frame: In original late 18th century, 4 1/4 inch scoop gold frame with ribbons and banding at the edges and corners, beading and an inner border of acanthus leaves. 69 3/4 x 55 1/2 inches (177 x 141 cm).
