Description:

Bartsch 46; Lewis R5. A fine impression in fine condition, aside from minor foxing. Trimmed to or just within the platemark. The attribution of this print to Girogio Ghisi is disputed. The prints is aftera drawing by Perino del Vaga (Italian, 1500-1547), in the Louvre. The drawing is one of six designs which were to be engraved on crystal for the Casetta Farnese, now in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples. Enea Vico (Italian, 1523-1567) etched an engraving (Bartsch 14) after another of the drawings, also oval in format, in 1543, and he may have made this print as well. The print depicts the return of Bacchus and Silenus from an expedition to the East. Bacchus rides on a chariot drawn by a tiger; Silenus rides an ass; Ariadne is to the right before a classical building.
