John Thompson
American
John Thompson's work begins with the act of observation; the artist observes natural patterns and stray occurrences and subsequently translates these simple, often fleeting phenomena into sketches, prints, and paintings. The infinite variables of texture, color, light, and pattern present in nature, as well as the possibility for these elements to change at any time, is of great interest to the artist. Thompson notes that the transient nature of such inspiration is also subject to reinterpretation by the human mind; once out of nature and back in the studio, "imagination takes over and the images begin to change." The capriciousness of environment and memory are thus reflected in his works.
Thompson maintains studios both in Waltham, MA and Washington, CT, and teaches printmaking at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He holds degrees from Syracuse University (BFA), University of Wisconsin-Madison (MA), Babson College (MFA), and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MFA).
