Recto inscribed in pencil lower left: "JW" and faintly "Dunstonburgh Castle". Verso inscribed in center: "Dunstonborough Castle / Northumberland". In very good condition aside from some damage to the lower right corner. Dunstanburgh Castle was built beginning in 1313 by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster as a defense against raids by the Scots. It eventually fell into ruin but remained a point of interest for travellers such as Ward, who made a trip to Northumberland in 1819.
