Gammell Trust #T183.A study for Gammell's finished painting, Strangers and Sojourners. Gammell was working on the concept of Strangers and Sojourners from about 1938 onwards, although the final painting was not completed until 1961. By the end of the 1950s Gammell's allegories were populated by people in contemporary dress which was a departure from his previous practice. The title comes from Chapter 29, verse 15 of the first Book of Chronicles which reads: "For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding."
