Gammell Trust #T151.From the Answer to Job series, Trickster is the last painting completed by Gammell in 1981. For 70 years, Gammell was fascinated by the various aspects of the trickster as represented in cultures all over the world. The face he portrays is serious with just a hint of a smile and perhaps a malevolent one at that. Throughout his career, Gammell used curves as a device to guide the viewer's eye and focus attention, which can clearly be seen in this painting.Exhibited: "Transcending Vision: R. H. Ives Gammell, 1893-1981", Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale, WA (May 12-November 15, 2001); The Guild of Boston Artists (April 1-29, 2002); Cape Museum of Fine Art, Dennis, MA (May 15-July 15, 2002); Lyme Academy, College of Fine Arts, Old Lyme, CT (October 25-November 30, 2002); Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, Blackburn, England (January 30-March 30, 2003).
