Signed and dated upper right: “George Sloane / Paris 1901.” In fine condition. Known for his small cabinet paintings in oil, primarily of seventeenth, eighteenth or early nineteenth century subjects, Sloane was undoubtedly influenced by Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl’s style of the Munich school. Sloane, trained in America, maintained a Paris studio for several years around the turn of the century on Avenue de Villiers but spent the rest of his life in the Boston area. He was also noted for his portrait miniatures on ivory and for portraits commissioned by the New England gentry. His wife, Marion P. Sloane, a landscape painter, shared with him their Ipswich Street studio in Boston until his death.
