Cohn 14. Signed in plate lower center: “George Cruikshank”. Inscribed lower center: “Courtenay’s escape from the Tower”. Illustration from the book by W.H. Ainsworth, “The Tower of London: An Historical Romance”, Part VIII. Published by Richard Bentley, London, August 1840. A fine impression with full margins in fine condition aside from discoloration and staining in left margin of page and small tear on lower paper edge. The book centers around historical figures, including Lady Jane Grey, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. Cruikshank and Ainsworth toured the Tower of London for inspiration and Cruikshank modeled his illustration after the actual room in the Tower and historical documentation.
