Family Jewels: For Two is the Most Imperfect of All Numbers, 2011
Oil on panel with gold leaf
In The Family Jewels, Barrett portrays a royal hermaphrodite master race and their imagined lifestyle of leisure. Fusing the bodies of historic leaders, from Hitler to Queen Elizabeth, the artist exposes their genitals as both attributes and verification of their unique elite status. These small icon-like paintings and drawings portray the fantasy realm of this omnisexual elite as they garden, ride horseback, take tea, frolic in the bedroom, and cook dinner in the castle kitchen.
Sold as a set of 9 paintings, 8 drawings, and 1 photographic collage.
