Hens in Sunlight, Hens No. 1, and Hens No. 2 all crowd a rather narrow view into a chicken coop with intense color and complex movement. In some, the impasto is almost perilously thick. The contrast of shadows and bright sunlight on the hens, as well as their complex arrangement, reflect Barnett’s interest in Rouault and Soutine.
