Holy Family with the Young St. John the Baptist or The Virgin with the Long Thigh [after Raphael San, c. 1520-1525
Engraving
15×10IN.CM

Bartsch 57; TIB 57; Delaborde 12; Shoemaker & Broun 59; Landau and Parshall 139. Signed in plate with empty tablet lower left corner, signifying the workshop of Marcantonio Raimondi. A rich, clear and brilliant impression, almost certainly lifetime; the “oily” characteristic of the ink indicates a printing before the sack of Rome in 1527. In nearly fine condition overall. Trimmed within platemark, on or just within image borderline; with image borderline visible on most sides all around. Two horizontal foldlines are visible verso only. With an expertly repaired tear or patch at the center top paper edge, which omits some engraved lines. The impression in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is slightly stronger and more richly inked. The impression is comparable to the one found in the Fogg Museum in Cambridge. Ex-collection Michael Berolzheimer.

This print is related to a group of paintings by of the Madonna and the Holy Family considered to have been designed by Raphael c.1518-19, and executed by the two principal members of his workshop, Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni. (Shoemaker) There is another version by Marco Dente da Ravenna (B. XIV.66.58; Landau and Parshall 140) Landau discusses the relationship between the two versions extensively.
