Monogramed in plate lower right. Signed in pencil lower right: “CJA Wilson” and titled in pencil lower left: “Lightening”. A fine impression in fine condition aside from slight soiling in upper margin with full margins.Lightening was the first of four magnificent ships built by Donald McKay of East Boston in 1854 for Black Ball Line (James Baines & Co.) of Liverpool, England. Under James Forbes, the former master of Marco Polo, the ship made the voyage from Boston to Liverpool in record time (13 days, 20 hours). The ship was used for many voyages between Melbourne and Liverpool, which it did in the record time of 63 days in 1854. It burned while loading wool at Greelong in 1869.
