Altisidora had an extraordinary racing career. Winning races since the age of three, under owner Richard Watt, Altisidora won numerous victories back to back in York, England. After another sweep at York, Altisidora won at the St. Leger meeting at Doncaster racecourse in Doncaster, England. Clifton Tomson is depicting this race in this painting. Tomson, who was a famed sporting painter at the time of this painting, was often commissioned by Earl Fitzwilliam, given Tomson’s ability to depict the excitement of the racecourse in a traditional style, which was popular at the time.
