Marco Dente da Ravenna

Italian (1493-1527)

Noah’s Sacrifice [after Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)], c. 1525
Engraving
8×9IN.CM

Circa date 1520-27. Bartsch 4; TIB 4. Verso bears collector’s mark (Lugt 1687) of K. E. von Liphart (1808-1891), and this print was probably in his December 1876 sales. A rich and clear early 16th century impression, almost certainly lifetime; the “oily” characteristic of the ink indicates a printing before the sack of Rome in 1527 (at which time Marco Dente da Ravenna was killed). In fine condition aside from a small area of paper reinforcement verso at the lower right corner; trimmed slightly within platemark, 1-2 mm outside complete image borderline. This impression is stronger and richer than the impression found in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Ex-collection Michael Berolzheimer.
