Landau CR 385. Edition of 25; this impression numbered 18 of 20. Numbered and titled in pencil lower left margin: “18/20 Soundings”; signed and dated in pencil lower right margin: “Lee Krasner 1962”. Printed by Pratt Graphics Center.

In 1962, 55 artists, including Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, and Lee Krasner, were commissioned to create original prints for display in the soon-to-be opened New York Hilton Hotel, located on Sixth Avenue. Soundings relates to the other black and white prints produced by Krasner at Pratt Graphics in 1962 for this project: Obsidian, Refractions, and The Civet. Like these prints, Soundings is a dense, arching composition reminiscent of Krasner’s paintings at the time. However, unlike the other prints, Soundings was never intended for the Hilton commission. In The Prints of Lee Krasner, Reba White Williams suggests that perhaps Krasner made Soundings to further explore the medium of lithography.
