Bartsch 42, TIB 42. Verso bears collector’s mark of K. E. von Liphart (1808-1891) (Lugt 1687), and this print was probably in his December 1876 sales. Signed in plate lower right: “RAPH-VRB/LVET”. A fine impression, most likely from the second quarter of the 16th century, rich and clear, in fine condition aside from minor scattered foxing in the blank areas of the ground. Repaired areas at lower right corner in blank areas; repaired tear at lower left corner from bottom edge through leg of figure with outstreatched arms; repairs at left edge. Trimmed on, or just within, image borderline; with most borderline visible on three sides, and trimmed slightly within borderline at bottom, particularly at left corner. This impression was compared to the very fine impression at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and it is slightly less rich and clear. Ex-collection Michael Berolzheimer.

Engraved after Raphael’s tapestry series cartoons for the Vatican. The scene depicts the biblical story of Ananias and his wife Sapphira. Shortly after the death of Christ, they joined the church and took a vow of poverty. However, they kept some money and as Peter accused Ananias of a sin against God he died, followed three hours later by his wife. (Acts 4, 5)
