The Holy Grail, circa 1925
Oil on paper mounted on canvas

Identified as “an artistic musing” by Elizabeth lves Hunter, the artist’s goddaughter and biographer, this work illustrates the artist’s interest in the legend of the Holy Grail. Throughout his artistic career, Gammell had a preference for this type of composition, in which the central figure and gesture are “enhanced and emphasized by a heraldic device and the use of an intricate curvilinear pattern”. Although these devices are prevalent in many of his sketchbooks and reference folios few of Gammell’s completed works include them.
