Burroughs often painted a series of pieces with a common theme. Throughout his career, Burroughs executed a group of paintings illustrating the myth of Venus and Adonis. In this particular work, Burroughs has captured the moment where Venus, having fallen desperately in love with the prince after cupid accidentally stabbed her with one of his arrows while playing, weeps after a boar has killed Adonis during a hunt.
