Constance Coleman Richardson

American (1905-2002)

Volcano Agua, Antigua Guatemala, 1962
Oil on paper
19×22IN.CM

In fine condition aside from pinholes in corners. Ex-collection Kenendy Galleries. Related to “Las Capuchinas and the Volcano Agua” (1962) which is illustrated in Kennedy Galleries catalogue, No. 8. Antigua Guatemala, a colonial capital of art and culture, was founded in 1543 and destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. The earthquake was so severe that it caused the capital to be moved to Guatemala City. Several ruined churches and monasteries sprinkled throughout the city attest to the violence of the damage. The volcano in the distance is dormant.
