Print by Henry M. O'Connor: Wonson's Cove, Gloucester [Massachusetts], represented by Childs Gallery

Henry M. O'Connor

American (1891-1975)

Wonson’s Cove, Gloucester [Massachusetts]
Etching
6×7IN.CM

R.org HMO-31, state ii/II, after plate was cut down at left, with addition of lines and clouds in the sky; rooftop peak of the highest house shows parallel horizontal lines. Artist’s three-leaf clover monogram in plate lower left. Watermark is: “J. WHATMAN”. A fine rich plate tone impression on laid paper, in fine condition aside from mounting tape adhered to upper corners, printed on sheet measuring 8 1/2 x 10 7/8″.

“Show the bowels of Wonson’s Cove, an inlet of Gloucester Harbor. This is determined by the steeple, which seems to resemble that of the (now non-existent) church which stood upon the corner of Middle and Pleasant Streets, just a few blocks away. Of interest to note is O’Connor’s inclusion of something called a “Lobster Car”. It’s the metal drum floating in the foreground with holes drilled into it. A lobster car was a holding tank for shellfish (crabs, clams, mussels, and of course lobsters), keeping them fresh and alive before they went to the market. An interesting detail for the artist to capture.” (Source: Personal correspondence of Gary Kraidman with Cape Ann Historical Association)
