Bartsch 247A (a copy in the same direction as 247), Similar to the TIB XIV 247. Signed in plate with artist’s monogram “MAF”; inscribed in plate: “RAPHAEL PINXIT IN VATICANO”. Watermark in center left of a square off center in a larger circle. A rich, clear and brilliant impression, almost certainly lifetime; the “oily” characteristic of the ink indicates a printing before the sack of Rome in 1527. In fine condition aside from slight evidence of center crease and pinhole at upper left corner of vault and in the folds around legs of figure on the right with outstretched arm and minor repaired knick in lower center edge. Thread margin at left edge and trimmed to 1/8 inch outside of borderline.
