Signed lower left:”W. P. Burpee”. In fine condition. After adopting pastel as one of his major media in 1900 and winning a medal for his work in pastel at the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair, Burpee went to the Azores and Spain in 1905-06. In addition to the Azores at Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel, he was centered in Spain in the south and especially at Granada and Cordoba. He exhibited his Azorean and Spanish pastels soon after, including “At the Fountain” at the Boston Art Club April 7-28, 1906. This may be the same pastel. He continued to exhibit the fruits of the 1905-06 the Azorian and Spanish trip through at least 1911. The two other pastels that he exhibited at the April 1906 exhibition were from the Azores, so this subject may also be Azorean.
