Burpee took classes at the Boston Art Club, first doing costume and figure studies from life in oil from May of 1886 to April of 1887. This is one of the last of those studies. Burpee followed these works with Boston Art Club classes in 1891 and 1892 where he learned to draw creditable academic male nudes in charcoal.
