Corlett II.4. Number 163 in an edition of 300. Numbered, signed, and dated in pencil top left: “163/300 rf Lichtenstein ’64”. Published by Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. A fine impression in fine condition with minimal residual toning post-conservation, and small pinhole-sized paper losses in the top and bottom left corners. Sheet measures 17 1/4 x 21 1/2 inches.
Foot and Hand, one of Lichtenstein’s earliest pop art prints, is inspired by comic books of the time. This image of a booted foot stepping on a hand reaching for a pistol is drawn from the comic Billy the Kid #43 (b), published in December 1963 by Charlton Comics Group. The dramatic scene is colored in the artist’s iconic primary palate and uses his signature Ben-Day dots.
