Titled in stone: “PATRIAE PATER”; inscribed in stone below image: “Drawn in Stone by Rembrandt Peale. Copy-right secured 1827. Pendleton’s Lithography Boston.”; inscribed in stone lower center: “Wahsington. / From the Original Portrait Painted by Rembrandt Peale.” Sheet size: 23 3/8 x 18 1/8″. The printed area of the print is in overall fine condition aside from an expertly redrawn area of paper loss at the left edge of the stone sill bearing the inscription. In overall very good condition aside from the fact that the margins and lowermost inscrpitions were trimmed from the sheet early in its history, later reattached and backed to piece of laid paper.
This exceedingly rare print was one of the first major lithographs made in America during the first two years of American lithography by the important American artist Rembrandt Peale.
