The fluid brushwork of this portrait reflects the European academic training Gullager received at the Royal Academy, in Denmark. Shortly after his arrival in Newburyport and Boston, Gullager became, along with John Johnson, the principal academic portrait painter in Boston from the time of Copley’s departure for London and Stuart’s return to Boston.
