With R.H. Ives Gammell Studios Trust label verso. Gammell painted his 23-panel series, “A Pictorial Sequence by R.H. Ives Gammell Based on ‘The Hound of Heaven’” over the course of 15 years (1941–1956). In them, the artist interpreted British poet Francis Thompson’s late-19th-century poem “The Hound of Heaven”. After completing this major allegorical sequence in 1956, Gammell felt compelled to revisit certain themes and figurative compositions in a series of smaller panels called the Fragments of an Uncompleted Cycle. His original plan was to display the smaller panels, or “Puppy Panels” as he affectionately called them, between the larger Hound panels.
