Justice Alito’s rationale for overturning Roe v Wade invoked Sir Matthew Hale, a 17th century jurist, seen lurking on the right, noted for his misogyny and presiding over witch trials. The putti impede Samuel’s flight from the witch, one offering a fish, a reference to his luxurious patronage from donors.
