Gammell Trust #1995-01. With text at lower edge: “Surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows”. This is one of two designs for an altar piece which was submitted to the Citizens Committee for the Army and the Navy during World War II. The alternate design was ultimately chosen because in this one Gammell used symbols which were not considered to be sufficiently Protestant. Exhibited: “Transcending Vision: R. H. Ives Gammell, 1893-1981”, Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale, WA (May 12-November 15, 2001); The Guild of Boston Artists (April 1-29, 2002); Cape Museum of Fine Art, Dennis, MA (May 15-July 15, 2002); Lyme Academy, College of Fine Arts, Old Lyme, CT (October 25-November 30, 2002); Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, Blackburn, England (January 30-March 30, 2003).
