Stamped with artist’s signature lower right: “Alfred Stevens”. Inscribed in pencil upper left: “2 droite”. Inscribed in ink verso: “Croquis pour le panorama du siecle”. In fine condition aside from pinholes in upper center with slight discoloration and tears along top edge and corners.

A study for the painting that Stevens executed in collaboration with Henri Gervex (1852-1929) for the Exposition Universelle of 1889, “Panorama de l’histoire du siècle 1789-1889,” which was a grand composition including French personalities from 1789-1889. The opera “Andrea Chénier” by Umberto Giordano is a famous recount of his life and was conducted by James Levine at the Metropolitan Opera in 1983.
