Signed, titled and dated in pencil lower right: “S Rowland Pierce / Valle Giulia, Rome July ’22”. In fine condition on toned paper; mounted to face mat. S. R. Pierce was a well- known architect.
The drawing depicts the Villa Madama in the left foreground. The Villa, commissioned by Cardinal Guillio de’Medici in the early 16th century, was designed by Rapahel and executed by his disciples including Antonio Sangallo the Younger and Guilio Romano. It was meant to imitiate the famous villas of ancient Rome such as are described by Pliny the Younger in his letters.
