Signed lower left,”W.P.Burpee”.Some burned edges at the top of the picture. The scorching was a result of the Harcourt Studio Building fire of November 11,1904. Burpee began making pastels with serious intent in the summer of 1900. He received a medal at the St. Louis Worlds Fair in 1904 for a pastel that he exhibited. This pastoral landscape with willows and cattle bordering a sunlit summer stream may be the same as, or closely related to the pastel that Burpee exhibited at the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters 16th annual exhibition at the Boston Art Club February 6-20, 1904; number 24 “Willows Bordering a Stream”.
