Gammell’s most consuming and important work was his Hound of Heaven Series. This finished study for the larger panel was probably painted about 1950 (the series was completed in 1956), but a larger study for panel XIX is dated 1942. The 1942 study does not include the elaborate coat of arms, but is otherwise very similar, and is evidence of the careful development of the series through re-studying designs over more than 15 years.
