In addition to providing comfort through her music, Patti LaBelle (similar to Dionne Warwick) has used her popularity within the Black LGBTQ+ community to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic. According to the National Library of Medicine, “LaBelle became a spokeswoman for the National Minority AIDS Council in 1987 and promoted the ‘Live Long, Sugar’ campaign to encourage people of color to seek treatment for AIDS.”
