Inscribed in ink lower left recto: “Sketch made by Everett Shinn / back stage at David Balasco’s / Majestic Theatre . West 42nd Street N.Y. City / The play “The Rose of the Rancho. / Date”. Shinn was very active in this period making studies of theater in New York from both front and backstage. He also sketched and painted portraits of actresses.
