Woman in Profile Reading is an excellent example of Fehrer’s best period. In the period of 1912-17 he painted many figure pictures of women in beautiful silks and other draperies that emphasized the special virtues of his style. In 1915, he had a one-man show at the Braus Gallery in New York City. A reviewer for the New York American commented: ‘Some weeks ago, when he was represented in the MacDowell Club exhibitions, I commented on the character of his technique. … One is conscious of a purity and clarity of color, of a singing quality in all the tone relations, and particularly of a joyous simplicity of sentiment.’
