Painting by Oscar Fehrer: Woman in Profile Reading, represented by Childs Gallery

Oscar Fehrer

American (1872-1958)

Woman in Profile Reading, c. 1915
Oil on canvas

Woman in Profile Reading is an excellent example of Fehrer’s best period.  In the period of 1912-17 he painted many figure pictures of women in beautiful silks and other draperies that emphasized the special virtues of his style.  In 1915, he had a one-man show at the Braus Gallery in New York City.  A reviewer for the New York American commented: ‘Some weeks ago, when he was represented in the MacDowell Club exhibitions, I commented on the character of his technique. … One is conscious of a purity and clarity of color, of a singing quality in all the tone relations, and particularly of a joyous simplicity of sentiment.’
