Joy is a powerful thing. Especially when trying to liberate oneself from the marginalization experienced by the Black LGBTQ+ community. One of the biggest sources of joy for Tracy Monroe (top row), McCall (middle row), and Antoine aka DeeDee Somemore (bottom row) was forming their own punk rock band named, Strange Beauties. The short-lived band (circa 1983-1986) created an important outlet for their creative expression and exploration of gender-nonconforming identities.
